zimmerfrei is a 'non-profit' project dedicated to contemporary art and visual culture in general.
zimmerfrei was born in 2004 as a space of 80 m3 behind a display window in lugano (switzerland), from which the public could see projects of emerging artists. inasmuch as this space changed destination, only 2 projects were realized there (R.I.P). so zimmerfrei is now transformed into a mobile platform, which intend to stimulate, create and produce contemporary arts projects beyond the museographic and institutional constrictions. no opening times are needed, and neither – of course – a fix space... zimmerfrei will suddenly "pop up" here and there and try to propose specifically created, intriguing and avantgardistic works by international artists. anyway, zimmerfrei will allway try to keep particula attention to the canton ticino, the souther switzerland, very nice place, but an unfertile land for contemporary art...
zimmerfrei has a light and flexible structure, able to react quickly and to improvise. zimmerfrei is the answer to a need to break the rhythm and the routine of the contemporary art circus, trying however to insert the promoted projects in a wider context and to realize them in a professional way.
zimmerfrei is initiated and curated by giovanni carmine with the indispensable collaboration of gino marrone, and a wild bunch of other friends.
